How to do Keyword Research for Affiliate Marketing

How to do Keyword Research for Affiliate MarketingAfter you have picked your area of interest or niche to do for affiliate marketing, the next big topic is keyword research related to your niche . Some common keywords are too competitive to rank, and thus the low hanging fruit is to go after long tail keywords which have good search volume and yet not too competitive to rank.

There are probably a number of available keyword research tools available out there for keyword research. I am going to share both free and payable methods.

Choosing the right keywords are important as they will help you to rank your websites more easily.

Free Keyword Research Tools

One method to combine two sources and Google keyword planner. There is a very good video already produced on YouTube, so please watch the video. This method is entirely free.

I am a premium member of Wealthy Affiliate (WA) and I use a Keyword Tool that is included. You can sign up for a free membership and that allows some limited keyword searches. I will illustrate how it is done.

WA Keyword Tool

As I am writing this post, I had in mind that I want to rank this post well on Google, so I also did a research on it. A common generic keyword on this article may be just Keyword Research. When I type this into WA Keyword Tool, I get:

WA Keyword Tool

You can see “keyword research” has a huge search volume of 8168 per month but when I click on competition, the competition (QSR) is 360 which is quite high. Do not worry if these numbers don’t make the most sense as there are benchmark numbers provided by WA.

Competition of 360 basically means you are competing against other websites which cumulatively rank and appear as 360 pages on Google when searched with this keyword. Your ultimately aim is to rank on page 1!

Keyword Competition

I know it takes time for me to gain authority for my relatively new website, so I am not going to be able to rank well on this keyword.

“How to do keyword research for affiliate marketing” has lower search volume but has a competition QSR of 16! This is much easier to rank and thus I have chosen to go with this. I have also carefully written this post in such a way that it will be the subject of my next planned post on Google Rankings, so please look out for it.

Jaaxy Keyword Tool

Jaaxy is a very powerful keyword research tool and I would probably call it a keyword research suite as it has other functionalities like site rankings, keyword domain name availability etc. A free account gives you 30 free searches but frankly 30 searches run out very fast. You can go ahead and sign up for a free membership (no credit cards required, no scams).

I find that it is a great tool but personally, I am careful not to invest too much into paid affiliate marketing tools. Until I have great successes and I have many more affiliate websites to maintain, I will stick with free tools which are more manual but work just as fine.

Keyword Research is an important step, so please pay attention to it. I welcome feedback on this post and if you have any questions, please leave comments below. I will write a review on Jaaxy when I become a paid member.
